US and Russia to meet for Ukraine ceasefire talks after night of drone attacks
In a significant diplomatic development, U.S. and Russian officials have initiated negotiations in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, aiming to establish a ceasefire in Ukraine. This initiative, led by U.S. President Donald Trump, seeks to implement a 30-day cessation of hostilities, focusing initially on halting strikes against energy infrastructure and ensuring the safety of Black Sea shipping routes.

The talks are structured as separate meetings between U.S. envoys and delegations from Ukraine and Russia. On Sunday, U.S. representatives met with Ukrainian officials, followed by discussions with Russian counterparts on Monday at Riyadh's Ritz-Carlton hotel. U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the negotiations as constructive, emphasizing his delegation's commitment to attaining peace and security. However, the path to a comprehensive peace agreement remains fraught with challenges. Russia has set forth stringent conditions, including demands for security guarantees and concessions from Kyiv. President Vladimir Putin acknowledged Russia's openness to the ceasefire but underscored the need for its security concerns to be addressed.
Complicating the diplomatic efforts, the negotiations occur amid ongoing military actions. Just hours before the talks commenced, Russian forces launched a substantial drone assault on Kyiv, resulting in at least seven civilian deaths, including a five-year-old girl and her father. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 122 out of 147 drones, but the attacks caused significant casualties and damage.
In response, Ukrainian forces targeted Russia's Engels airbase in Saratov Oblast with a "massive" drone attack. Russian authorities reported downing 54 drones over the area, with ensuing fires and damage to approximately 30 houses.
The residents of Kherson, a frontline Ukrainian city, have endured relentless drone attacks, leading to a climate of fear and skepticism regarding the peace talks. The city's populace, having experienced occupation and continuous assaults, remains cautious about the potential outcomes of the negotiations.
Despite these adversities, the
U.S.-mediated talks in Saudi Arabia represent a concerted effort to de-escalate
the conflict. The proposed 30-day ceasefire is envisioned as a precursor to a
more enduring peace agreement. However, the ongoing hostilities and the complex
geopolitical landscape underscore the formidable challenges that lie ahead in
achieving a lasting resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
